Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is a treatment where your healthcare provider applies extreme cold to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue. To create this severe cold, your provider will use a substance like liquid nitrogen or argon gas. Cryotherapy can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions and some cancers, including prostate and liver cancer. This therapy can treat tissue externally (on the skin) and internally (inside the body). This treatment can also be called cryoablation.

Why Cryo Therapy ?
Cryotherapy is often less invasive than traditional surgical methods. This type of treatment removes damaged or diseased tissue that comes from a variety of medical conditions. It is usually performed through a needle or probe inserted directly into the tumor, reducing recovery time and risks associated with open surgery. Most people recover quickly from the procedure and with little pain.
Some types of cancer where cryotherapy is commonly used:
- Bone
Cancer:
treats bone cancer by using extreme cold to destroy cancerous cells. Cryotherapy can be used alone or in combination with other treatments such as chemotherapy.
- Cervical
Cancer:
Cryotherapy is typically used for early-stage cervical cancer or precancerous lesions. It is effective, quick, and has a high success rate with minimal side effects. This approach is particularly useful when surgery is not an option or in conjunction with other treatments like radiation therapy radiotherapy for comprehensive care.
- Liver
Cancer:
A cryoprobe, guided by imaging techniques such as ultrasound or CT, is inserted into the liver tumor, freezing and killing the cancer cells and can be combined with other therapies like chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
- Prostate
Cancer:
Cryotherapy can be used as a primary treatment for early-stage prostate cancer, or as a salvage therapy for cancer recurrence after other treatments. It may be combined with hormone therapy or radiation therapy for enhanced effectiveness.
Side Effects of Cryotherapy :
- Pain : Some discomfort or pain at the treatment site during or after the procedure.
- Cramping : Mild cramping or discomfort in the pelvic area.
- Skin Changes : Changes in skin color or texture, which may persist.

Summary to Cryotherapy :
- Cryotherapy is a treatment that uses extreme cold produced by liquid nitrogen or argon gas to destroy cancer cells and abnormal tissue.
- Benefits of cryotherapy such as :
- 1. Less invasive compared to traditional surgery.
- 2. Destroys abnormal cells with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
- 3. Has a shorter recovery time compared to invasive surgeries.
- Researchers are studying cryosurgery as a possible treatment for oral cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer and kidney cancer.
