ORAL CANCER also known as mouth cancer, is cancer of the lining of the lips, mouth, or upper throat. Oral cancer is fairly commo and can be cured if found and treated at an early stage (when it's small and has not spread). Oral cancer rates increase with age. The increase becomes more rapid after age 50 and peaks between ages 60 and 70. Oral squamous cell carcinoma is a disease of environmental factors, the greatest of which is tobacco. Aside from cigarette smoking, other carcinogens for oral cancer include alcohol, viruses (particularly HPV 16 and 18), radiation, and UV light.
Also called carcinoma in situ describes abnormal cells in the lining of the lips or oral cavity.
