OVARIAN CANCER is a growth of cells which multiply, spread and destroy healthy body tissue begins in the female organ having eggs (Ovaries). It is a cancerous tumor of an ovary. It may originate from the ovary itself or more commonly from communicating nearby structures such as fallopian tubes or the inner lining of the abdomen. The ovary is made up of three different cell types including epithelial cells, germ cells, and stromal cells. When these cells become abnormal, they have the ability to divide and form tumors.
Tumor cells are localized in the ovaries or the fallopian tubes without extensive spread to other body regions.
The cancer is in one or both ovaries or fallopian tubes and has spread into the pelvis.
The cancer has spread beyond the pelvis into the abdomen.
The cancer has spread outside of the abdomen and pelvis to more distant organs, such as the lungs.
It is the main treatment for ovarian cancer, recommended primarily when the majority of the cancer or affected tissue can be removed successfully. For few patients with observable metastasis, cytoreductive surgery may be performed to debulk the volume of the tumor, such as hysterectomy.
Immunotherapy may help for long-term control over your ovarian cancer uses the immune system to fight cancer. An immunotherapy drug called pembrolizumab has been discovered to block PD-L1 on the surface of T cells, allowing T cells to find and kill cancer cells.
Chemotherapy is usually the treatment for most women with ovarian cancer. It is given either to shrink cancer cells before surgery, or to destroy any tumor cells left behind after surgery. With a recurrence up to 15-25% for early-stage patients.
It is used to kill cancer cells with high-energy rays of radiation. Helps to treat ovarian cancer that has spread to the pelvis or to other parts of the body. It may be used after chemotherapy or surgery to help reduce the symptoms of advanced cancer.
It uses drugs to find and attack cancer cells. Each type of targeted therapy targets in or around the cancer cell that is helping it grow and survive. It may be an option for advanced ovarian cancer that reoccur.
The drugs used in hormonal therapy block the effects of the hormone estrogen on ovarian cancer cells. It is a type of systemic therapy is used to treat epithelial ovarian cancer and ovarian stromal tumors.
